Using AI? Check what is and isn’t allowed!
You can check the guidelines here: What is allowed? - AI Tools at University
The university approaches AI in three categories of assignments. You should be able to check which category your assessment is on the canvas module pages.
The academic regulations explain academic misconduct and in examples they include: ‘failure to acknowledge, attribute or reference the use of generative AI tools to create text, images, video or code’ and ‘the unauthorised use of generative AI tools where a Module Leader has explicitly
forbidden its use in the assessment task Academic Regulations Section 10.
Top Tips:
- Demonstrating that work is your own is important. Record evidence of how you worked on your assessment at different stages, including drafts, rough work, search histories.
- Be careful of using AI to write or change the words of your assessment.
- Don’t get AI to do your reference list for you – it can make up sources that don’t exist!
- Be careful when you use AI to help you understand class reading. It is important that the words in your assessment should be your own.
- We have come across a number of students running into issues with things like Grammarly. Check what AI software (if any!) is allowed and stay within the guidelines for its use.
- If using Grammarly, check what version you are using and if the AI setting is on.
If you’re worried about your writing style, use study skills and contact your tutor rather than over relying on AI and potentially running into problems at a later date!
