ABOUT US

Join the Afro-Caribbean Medical Association (ACMA)!

The Afro-Caribbean Medical Association is a student-led society that celebrates diversity, promotes inclusion, and uplifts the voices of students from Afro-Caribbean backgrounds and beyond.

Whether you’re attending one of our networking evenings, joining a clinical teaching session, or exploring healthcare issues that impact underrepresented communities — ACMA is here to support you academically, socially, and professionally.

 

Our Aims

  • Collaborate-> We aim to build strong relationships with other medical and healthcare societies across ARU and beyond, creating opportunities for shared learning, leadership, and professional development.
  • Educate-> We run inclusive teaching sessions covering a wide range of medical topics, with a special focus on health inequalities and conditions that disproportionately affect Afro-Caribbean communities.
  • Empower & Support-> We support organisations and charities that align with our values and seek to uplift the Afro-Caribbean population through advocacy, outreach, and education.

 

What to Expect This Year

Here’s a glimpse of what we’re planning for the 2025/26 academic year:

  • Teaching sessions on OSCE skills, clinical imaging, and Afro-Caribbean health
  • Networking events with Black and POC doctors, surgeons, and academics
  • School outreach supporting aspiring medics from underrepresented backgrounds
  • Roundtable discussions on topics like men’s mental health and sickle cell awareness
  • Cultural celebration nights, film screenings, and collaborative socials with other societies
