Hi! My name is Sharmeen Jawad and I am a current first-year medical student running for the role of Vice President (VP) Healthcare Practice at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU). My vision? Put simply, to represent YOU and enable you to make the most of your university experience, both inside and outside of the lecture theatre! As VP, I will lead in representing ARU’s vast range of healthcare students, and support with overall strategy and guidance of the Union. My role will involve holding others to account whilst providing a further link between healthcare students and the Student Union. I realise the importance of being entrusted with a role like this- with great power comes great responsibility! - and believe I have the skills needed to effectively carry out this role to the highest level possible. Please vote for me if you consider me suitable for this role; feel free to also ask me about my plans for the upcoming year and what I have in store. I strongly believe in the power of student voice and want to hear from you!
Some of my (many) plans include chairing regular feedback sessions to gather your views on what is going well, and what needs to change. Examples of issues that I am passionate to provide solutions for include mental health support alongside studies, improved healthcare and campus facilities, transport to and from placement, university parking and course satisfaction. I can bring professionalism and optimism to the role, ensuring that students feel heard and are well-informed. I will ensure to attend all faculty meetings where possible, as I understand the importance of teamwork and championing opportunities. I aim to represent healthcare students not only extra curricularly, but also academically. We are all here for education, after all! Alongside supporting elected course reps and volunteers, I will run projects to improve the experience of healthcare practice students as well as the ARU student body.
My contributions to many school and university-based activities highlight my sense of social responsibility. During my few months here at ARU, I have co-founded the Healthy Herons project, an initiative focusing on student well-being at university. I have also contributed to Charity Week 2021, organised a bake sale for a charity fundraiser and plan to do much more during my time here! I have also previously studied another healthcare course (Biomedical Science) at St George’s, University of London. Therefore I feel I am very knowledgeable about the needs of healthcare students and can use my previous experience, combined with my skills and passion, to fulfil this role to the best of my ability! At St George’s, UoL, I was a Student Ambassador, Head of SolidariTee (a charitable organisation providing legal aid for refugees and asylum seekers), and Treasurer of Islamic Society, amongst other roles. These positions have required initiative, decisiveness, and excellent interpersonal skills.
I always ensure that any task I undertake is done meticulously and to the highest standard possible. My various experiences in leadership and management enable me to pay close attention to detail and ensure that things run smoothly. My friendliness and sociability is most evident by my involvement in university life across the board, ranging from Netball to Islamic Society to ARMS! I relish the opportunity to raise money and awareness for student causes and am passionate about charity work and volunteering. I am a highly motivated and hardworking individual, aiming to pursue opportunities that allow me to gain valuable experience and become a better-rounded individual. If selected for VP Healthcare Practice, I will fully immerse myself in everything I do. Most importantly, I will endeavour to be the means through which healthcare students have their voices heard and drive positive change! My variety of experience has enabled me to gain the expertise needed to become VP Healthcare Practice, hence why I believe that I would be well-suited to the role. Please consider voting for me if you feel the same!
