If something unexpected comes up that affects your ability to submit your work on time or to the standard you’d like, you can submit late or request a short extension.

You might be able to submit your work late. The options are:

  • Same day submissions i.e after the 2pm deadline but before 23.59, will get a 10% reduction on the assessments grade.
  • Up to 2 days (2:00pm on 2nd day) will be capped at the pass mark.

The pro’s and cons’:

  • Pro: Work is submitted and if it passed there is no requirement to submit work again.
  • Cons: Work mark is reduced.

You’re allowed to extend the deadline for an individual piece of work by five working days, once per assignment.

Have a look at this handy extension flowchart Student extension request process

What types of extensions are available?

Short term extensions are for 5 working days. You can only receive one 5 day extension for an assessment.

Longer-term extensions can be requested in certain circumstances, for example, due to a placement delay.

If you're requesting a long extension for a placement issue, we'll need a supporting email from the module leader or your ARU supervisor.

What reasons are acceptable for an extension?

  • A short-term illness

  • A short-term illness of any person for whom you are a carer.

  • Authorised absence during teaching weeks

  • An enforced change in employment circumstances for which only short notice was given.

What reasons are not acceptable for an extension?

  • Academic workload.

  • Misreading the instructions on submission deadlines.

  • Computer, printer or any other technical failure (always keep a back-up copy of your work). Always upload to Canvas well before the 14.00 deadline so you have time for your work to upload.
  • Unauthorised absence from ARU, e.g, a holiday taken during teaching weeks.

How long does it take to get a response after applying for an extension?

We aim to respond within 5 working days, however we may take longer during busy periods.

We’ll email you to tell you about the outcome of your request. If your extension request is agreed, we’ll update the submission date on e:Vision. You're expected to check your student email account regularly and check the e:Vision results page for the submission date.

We recommend working towards your original deadline. If your request is declined and you don't submit on time you should have the opportunity to submit during the late work period if the assessment isn't a scheduled activity. Please be aware that there's a penalty for submitting late. See here for details.
