SAHAR BACHU (Common Voice)

Sahar Riyaz Bachu

I believe ARU is one of the most diverse and multicultural universities in the UK, with over 35,000 students from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and life experiences. I am proud to be one of those students. As a second-year Software Engineering student, I understand first-hand the challenges we face.

Although many support services exist within the university, too many students are unaware of them or unsure how to access them. If elected as Welfare & Liberations Officer, I will place student wellbeing at the forefront of everything we do. I will improve the visibility of existing services, advocate for new ones where needed, and ensure students’ voices are central to decisions that affect them. Decisions about students must never be made without students.

Facilitating Access

A wide range of services are available, but access can feel overwhelming due to lack of awareness or confidence. I will improve communication around the support systems available, clearly explaining what they are and how to access them in informal, low-pressure settings.

Reaching out for help can feel intimidating. Some students may feel vulnerable or embarrassed speaking up. I want to create safe, judgement-free spaces where students feel comfortable voicing their concerns. Everyone deserves support without fear of stigma.

Pupils at our Pupil

I am passionate about amplifying student voices, especially those from marginalised backgrounds. The Union should not only represent students but take meaningful action in their interests.

I propose implementing additional forums alongside Module Evaluation Surveys, such as Liberation and Wellbeing Forums. These would provide informal, non-contact opportunities for students to share honest feedback about their experiences and needs. The insights gathered would be fed directly into Union decision-making.

Transparency is essential. I will introduce termly updates outlining the key issues raised and the actions being taken in response, so students can see how their feedback leads to change.

I will also hold open office hours across all campuses, giving students the opportunity to speak with me face-to-face or book appointments if preferred. For some, sending an email can feel daunting. By being present and approachable, I hope to make Union leadership more accessible to all students.

Every Campus Matters

No campus should ever feel secondary, regardless of its size or location. Every student matters equally.

To ensure consistent standards of welfare across all campuses, I will work with My Team, Student Representatives and Liberation groups to develop a welfare benchmark. Regular campus check-ins, combined with forum feedback filtered by location, will ensure issues are identified and addressed promptly.

By committing to regular visits across Cambridge, Chelmsford, Peterborough, London and Writtle, I will ensure our campaigns and support services remain visible and accessible to all.

My Commitment

I will be a strong and compassionate voice for students.
I will listen actively and remain approachable.
I will act with honesty and transparency.
I will ensure every voice is heard and used to create meaningful change.

As Welfare & Liberations Officer, I vow to listen to every voice, from everywhere.
